Christopher N. Candlin is Chair Professor of Applied Linguistics and Director of the centre for English Language Education and Communication Research at the City University of Hong Kong. His previous post was as Professor of Linguistics in the School of English, Linguistics, and Media, and Executive Director of the National Centre for English Language Teaching and Research at Macquarie University, Sydney, having earlier been Professor of Applied Linguistics and Director of the Centre for Language in Social Life at the University of Lancaster. He also co-founded and directed the Institute for English Language Education at Lancaster, where he focused on issues in in-service education for teachers and teacher professional development.

He is co-series editor of Language Teaching: A Scheme for Teacher Education, published by Oxford University Press.
