Glyn Hughes began his career as a teacher of German and French in the UK. Since moving to Finland in 1968, he has been extensively involved with English language teaching. In 1971 he joined the Teacher Education Department of Jyväskylä University, Finland, where he is responsible for the pre-service training of English teachers, mainly at primary level.

He has produced several coursebooks and computer-assisted language learning materials and arranged numerous in-service training courses, both in Finland and elsewhere, including the UK, Canada, Spain, France, Germany, South Korea and Japan. He is the author of the original Handbook of Classroom English (1981). His research interests include classroom language and Canadian national identity.
