Back to the classroom: Digitally improved?: Rachel Appleby
If there’s one thing we’ve all missed while working from home it’s the personal and face-to-face contact – not only with wider family and friends, but also with our students. It’s been a huge challenge, and has tested everyone’s patience. However, it’s also helped us develop a number of skills! So, what have we learnt? What are we now better at?
Besides a steep digital learning curve for many of us, I believe we’ve also developed our resilience and empathy. Our students, too, have had to adapt, and be more autonomous and better organised.
This session aims to demonstrate how we can transfer and build on these skills in the classroom. We’ll also look out some of best and easiest tricks and tips to bring our course materials to life, and give our students the best possible learning experience.

Getting the balance right in digitalised teaching and learning: Erika Osváth
Over the past year, education had to suddenly move from face-to-face to the online classroom environment. A great number of both teachers and students worldwide reported that moving online caused a profound sense of loss. In this webinar, we are going to look at ways of getting the balance right focusing on skills of concentration, connection and independent learning.

Turning your coursebook into a research tool: Gareth Davies
You can make fish soup out of fish, but you can’t make a fish out of fish soup. This past year has changed the way we think about learning and teaching and there is no turning back. We might soon be back in the classroom, but we can’t take the digital out of our teaching. Teaching online has not always been perfect, but one of the highlights has been the wealth of information we have at our fingertips. In this session we will look at how to encourage students to use the coursebook as a springboard for their curiosity. As we turn the pages of a course book, we should be asking questions; who are the people on the page? What does the headline mean? What’s happening in the pictures? Why do I want to find out more about this? A good course book has googleable content which can inspire students to find out more about the topics they are learning and about the world around them. So, join me to discover how to turn our course books into a research tool.

Rachel Appleby is a freelance teacher, trainer and coursebook writer. She focuses on 1:1 teaching, Business English & working with students applying to study abroad. She worked for 9 years at ELTE University Budapest and now teaches at Corvinus University.
Rachel is a CELTA and LCCI trainer, and trains university staff, online and F2F, in transitioning to teaching their subject in English at BA and MA levels.
Course materials include: OUP’s Business one:one, International Express, Business Result and Navigate.

Erika Osváth, MEd in Maths, DTEFLA, is a freelance teacher, teacher trainer, materials writer and co-author with Edmund Dudley of Mixed Ability Teaching (Into the Classroom series, OUP). Before becoming a freelance trainer in 2009, she worked for International House schools for 16 years in Eastern and Central Europe, where she worked as a YL co-ordinator, trainer on CELTA, LCCI,1-1, Business English, YL and VYL courses, and Director of Studies. She has extensive experience in teaching very young learners, young learners and teenagers. Her main interests lie in these areas as well as helping teachers to bring out the best of both themselves as well as of their learners in both face-to-face and online teaching. She regularly travels to different parts of Hungary and other parts of the world to teach demonstration lessons with local children, do workshops for teachers whenever possible, and this is something she particularly enjoys doing as it gives her the opportunity to delve into the human aspects of these experiences.

Gareth Davies is an author, storyteller, teacher and teacher trainer based in Pontypridd in South Wales. Gareth has been involved in English language teaching since 1995, teaching in the Czech Republic, Portugal, Spain, Japan and the United Kingdom, as well as speaking at teacher training events all over the world. Gareth will be well-known to some of you thanks to his time working with Oxford University Press in the Czech Republic. Since leaving Prague, Gareth has set up his own storytelling venture, taught at Cardiff University, been a senior curriculum consultant for a major teaching organisation in Japan and been a Trinity examiner. He also continues to work closely with OUP developing materials and delivering trainings across Europe. Gareth’s latest novel, Humans, Being is out now with Cinnamon Press.
