Engagement in extensive reading is universally recognised as the defining habit of successful students. But, if extensive reading is so powerful, why isn’t it part of every classroom routine? What are the challenges of setting up an extensive reading programme?



Engagement in extensive reading, essentially the reading of large numbers of easy books for pleasure, is universally recognised as the defining habit of successful students. For second language learners it also provides the essential practice needed to rehearse and embed structures and vocabulary permanently into long-term memory. But, if extensive reading is so powerful, why isn’t it part of every classroom routine? What are the challenges of setting up an extensive reading programme? How does extensive reading create more communicative lessons? Books are the best teachers. Reading for pleasure really can enable our students to become autonomous and ambitious life-long learners.


Nina Prentice is a secondary English teacher, ELT teacher trainer, researcher and author with a particular interest in extensive reading and its impact on general literacy and language learning. With Oxford University Press, she has worked on large scale reading programmes in Jordan, Italy and Poland with students of all ages, primary to adult. Among other publications and research, she contributed chapters for Into the Classroom: Extensive Reading (OUP 2015) and is currently collaborating on a project with OUP to develop a test of reading fluency.

Joining the webinar
