Extensive Reading Project for Schools in Italy
Read On! Children's Hospital Project
On 18 December 2015, Nina Prentice and Donatella Fitzgerald presented two Read On! trolleys to the Children's Hospital Bambino Gesù in Rome, and provided training in how to engage the children in reading with related games and activities. Prof.ssa Rosa Isabella Vocaturo wrote the following by way of thanks:
la presente è per ringraziarvi per la preziosa e ricca donazione di libri fatta ai bambini dell'Ospedale "Bambino Gesù".
Questo progetto rappresenta una opportunità veramente importante sia per gli alunni ricoverati, sia per quelli che - essendo presenti con continuità in day hospital - trascorrono comunque molte ore lontani dalla loro scuola di appartenenza. In questo modo essi potranno godere di momenti rilassati di lettura e di condivisione di esperienze.
On 28 October 2015, a trolley sponsored by Generali was presented to the Policlinico Umberto I, Reparto Pediatria, Rome. Policlinico teacher Professoressa Gabriella Ianni is using the library in the hospital to support the learning of young long-term care patients in the hospital which deals with a variety of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Prof.ssa Ianni was delighted to have this powerful resource to engage children who are trying to keep up with school work while coping with serious illness.
These two trolley donations are the first steps in the pilot project of a new initiative to provide Read On! libraries for hospital schools all over Italy. As well as the paper libraries, students will have access to digital and audio versions of the graded readers. Apart from the libraries, teachers will also receive a range of resources and ongoing targeted teacher training to maximise the effectiveness of the libraries in these difficult situations.
If you would like to sponsor a trolley for your local Children's Hospital, please contact Donatella Fitzgerald.
